Sons of The Silence win
Mohamed Rady wasn't away from events going around him, he was its son. The generation of the sixties witnessed the hardest defeat ever, could be experienced by a nation, while still aspiring for life and future. The defeat of 1967, was the daughter and hier of corruption, oppression and rule of forces centers..demonstrations of students in February 1968, was the spontaneous upshot and the echo of angry selves..the first core for The new Cinema Group was formed, after the first conference of the youth cinematographers.
The first Festival for youth cinema, was held in Alexandria in 1968. The authority started to admit them, after a long time of absence, as a try to absorb this anger, it opened cinema establishment door in front of them, it also assigned one of The Cinema Institute graduates as a member in the establishment board of administration!...the group started participation system with it, which upshot started with two films,"A Song on the Corridor" directed by Ali abd el khaleq and "Shades on the Other Side" for Ghaleb Sha'ath.
The new cinema youth represented thought and social methods and different professional interestswhat gathered them was refusing this situation in realityand in cinema!
No doubt, Mohamed Rady belonging to the group since its born, and his presidency of the board for six yearsbetween 1968-1974what matters more was the angry and arousing currents in the Egyptian societybelow and over the groundno doubt, this reality formed its passion..politically and culturallymade him reconsider his former ideas.
How can he embody dreams of the group?..fortunately, he found his aim in the novel of Mageed Tobia"Sons of The Silence".
The plot expressed exactly the circumstances, in which Egypt lived after the defeat..what was called the deplete war, through a youth sector point of view, represents the majority of the middle class and below. From cairo to the inner upper Egypt. Mageed Tobia, wrote it in about thirty five scenes..Mohamed Rady extracted out of this amazing scenario, in its details and characters, and the expressing about the Egyptian reality in this moment, an integrated work of art, in all its artistic elements, it's considered today one of the Egyptian cinema classicsit wasn't strange to be selected in the biggest artistic referendum, as one of the best hundred Egyptian films in its history.
Can we say now that Mohamed Rady, throughout his artistic career, left an artistic print of his own?
It's noticed that most of his films, goes through what is goin on and what was going on in the Egyptian society, for about half a century..since defeat of 1967, deplete war, victory of October 1973, period of forces centers, the openness and what accompanied it of the falling apart of the society principleswhat happened in Egypt?...and why did it happen?..Mohamed Rady films are a brave attempt to answer those questions. The answer may be in the form of frank political scream (An Appointment with Mr. President), (Sons of The Silence), (Mothers in The Exile) or by footage contribution in the answer (Behind The Sun, The Escape from The Asylum, The circulating Stone). In most of his films he deals also with his victims, whether they are heroes or in subordinate roleswith compassion and understanding to their social and political circumstances..especially with those who don't own authority or money.
This social and human sense, imparted a human touch on his characters. It's indeed convictedpolitically or morally..but he's keen on revealing their dramatic motives.
Let's remember that barely he's the only cinematic historian, for war of deplete and October war, not only with his Feature films..the last was "The Championships Wall" but also the Documentary films he introduced, barely unknown to us such as, October the Eternals Epic (for Inquiries)- Days of Heroes (for Television)- The Dawn was(Cinema Establishment)- Birds of Freedom and others..it's an effort that deserves a tribute..because it's also a tribute for the maker of the Egyptian soldier crossing.
